Vampire Crab Complete Care Guide: Geosesarma Species
Vampire crabs are not aquarium pets — they are land climbers that drown in submerged tanks and thrive in humid paludariums. This vampire crab complete care guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers Geosesarma species selection, the 80/20 land-to-water layout, humidity targets, breeding behaviour and Carousell sourcing for Singapore’s morph-hunting hobbyists. The cute purple crustaceans on Instagram come from keepers who built proper setups, not converted fish tanks.
Genus Snapshot
Geosesarma covers several dozen small Asian land crabs, with the trade favouring G. dennerle (classic red devil), G. notophorum (Sulawesi orange), G. hagen (Java purple) and morphs like carnival, yellow and lime-eyed. Carapace width 2-2.5 cm, leg-span 4-5 cm. Lifespan 2-3 years in captivity. Native to damp Indonesian forest floors near streams, they spend 95 percent of time above water.
Paludarium Setup
A 40x30x30 cm tank houses four to six crabs. Layer: 5 cm drainage substrate (LECA balls), mesh divider, 8 cm coco coir mix for the land zone, and one third of the footprint as 3-5 cm deep water. Add dense cork bark branches, spider wood and moss from the decoration and substrate category over the land area for climbing. Install a tight lid with ventilation slits — the humidity must stay above 70 percent yet air must circulate to prevent mould.
Water and Humidity Balance
Small water dish area kept clean with a mini sponge filter or weekly hand-changes. Use dechlorinated PUB tap — these crabs tolerate Singapore tap pH 7.0-7.8 fine. Humidity 70-85 percent maintained by daily misting with a spray bottle or automated mister. Ambient temperature 24-28 °C suits tropical climate perfectly; no heater needed in Singapore. A hygrometer is essential — dry setups kill gill-breathing crabs silently.
Substrate and Planting
Coco coir mixed with orchid bark holds moisture without compacting. Plant pothos, Anubias barteri emersed, Java moss patches and bromeliads for visual depth. Avoid plants requiring bright light since vampire crabs prefer dim conditions. Live plants keep humidity stable and provide grazing opportunities. Replace substrate every 6-9 months to prevent mould and ammonia buildup in the enclosed setup.
Diet
Omnivorous scavengers. Offer sinking shrimp pellets from the fish food and feeding category, blanched vegetables, fruit pieces (apple, cucumber, courgette), occasional bloodworm, bits of boiled egg, and leaf litter. Feed three times weekly, removing uneaten food the next day to prevent mould. Calcium matters for moulting — cuttlebone or crushed eggshell left in the enclosure supports shell hardening. Vary protein sources to avoid dietary deficiencies.
Moulting
Vampire crabs moult every 4-8 weeks when growing, less often as adults. During moult they hide under bark or in substrate burrows for 48-72 hours while the new exoskeleton hardens. Do not disturb or remove the shed exoskeleton — they eat it for calcium recovery. Moulting failures signal humidity crashes or calcium deficiency. Adjust setup if failures repeat.
Social Structure
Live in small groups with modest hierarchy. Pairs work; trios with two females one male often stabilise well. Single-sex groups avoid breeding complications. Males display claws when asserting dominance but fatalities in adequately sized enclosures are rare. Overcrowding amplifies aggression — 40×30 cm minimum for four, scaling up from there.
Breeding Complications
Geosesarma release tiny larvae directly on land (no planktonic phase needed) but survival rates in captivity are low without specific substrate moisture and microfauna. Breeders condition pairs with high-protein diet and stable humidity. Juveniles emerge at 3-4 mm and require tiny food (springtails, microfauna cultures). Most Singapore hobbyists buy rather than breed, which sustains trade demand for wild imports.
Singapore Sourcing — Carousell Dominance
Specialist Carousell breeders are the main channel for morphs — Sulawesi Orange, Yellow Devil, Purple Vampire and Carnival ranging SGD 15-40 per crab depending on rarity. Occasional C328 stock at SGD 10-20 for classic red devils. Check seller photos for clean carapaces and active posture. Wild-caught imports stress out; captive-bred juveniles transition better.
Tank Mates
Species-only setups work best. Possible paludarium co-tenants: dwarf frogs in the water zone (different moisture needs), anole lizards (not recommended — prey on crabs), snails. Do not add fish — the shallow water cannot host stable biology, and any stray crab will eat them. Keep the paludarium focused on the crabs and you will get better behaviour display.
Escape Awareness
Every vampire crab owner loses one eventually. They climb cork bark, silicone seams, cables, anywhere with grip texture. A 5 mm gap is enough. Check lid fit weekly, cover all cable exits with foam or silicone, and count crabs during feeding. Lost crabs dehydrate within 12 hours in aircon rooms. Invest in a proper lid upfront and the risk falls substantially.
