It is one of the most lethal parasitic diseases in the aquarium hobby, often killing fish faster than ich if not identified and treated promptly.

The parasite is photosynthetic, meaning it can derive energy from light as well as from its host. This characteristic is key to understanding both why blackouts are part of the treatment and why the parasite can survive in a tank even without fish for extended periods.

How to Identify Velvet

Velvet is notoriously difficult to spot, especially in its early stages. Unlike ich, which produces obvious white spots, velvet manifests as an extremely fine, dust-like coating that can be almost invisible under normal aquarium lighting.

The Torch Test

The most reliable method for detecting velvet at home is the torch (flashlight) test:

  1. Turn off all aquarium and room lights.
  2. Shine a bright torch or phone flashlight at the fish from an angle (approximately 45 degrees to the glass).
  3. Look for a fine, gold, rust-coloured or yellowish dust on the fish’s body, particularly on the back, head and gill covers.
  4. The dust may shimmer slightly under the angled light.

If you see a uniform, fine dusting (as opposed to the distinct, individual white dots of ich), velvet is likely the culprit.

Why Velvet Is More Dangerous Than Ich

Several factors make velvet deadlier than its more well-known counterpart:

  • Harder to detect: By the time velvet is visually obvious, the infestation is often severe and the fish is already in critical condition.
  • Higher parasite load: Velvet parasites are much smaller than ich, meaning a single fish can harbour thousands of parasites before visible signs appear.
  • Gill destruction: Oodinium has a strong preference for gill tissue. Massive gill infestation can cause death from suffocation before body spots become apparent.
  • Faster progression: In Singapore’s warm water (28–32°C), the velvet life cycle accelerates, meaning the parasite reproduces and reinfects rapidly.
  • Photosynthetic survival: Unlike ich, Oodinium can survive for extended periods without a host by photosynthesising, making it harder to starve out of a tank.

Early Warning Symptoms

Because the visible dust often appears late, learning to recognise behavioural symptoms that precede the visible coating is crucial for early intervention:

Behavioural Signs (Often Appear Before Visible Spots)

  1. Clamped fins: The fish holds its fins tightly against its body. This is often the very first sign.
  2. Flashing: The fish rubs or scrapes itself against rocks, substrate or decorations, trying to dislodge the parasites.
  3. Rapid breathing: Gill infestation causes laboured, rapid gill movement. This can be one of the earliest symptoms when the parasites target the gills first.
  4. Lethargy: Reduced activity, hovering in one spot or staying near the surface.
  5. Loss of appetite: Refusing food or spitting it out.

Visual Signs (Later Stage)

  • Fine gold, rust or yellowish dust visible on the body.
  • Skin peeling or sloughing off in patches.
  • Colour fading or a greyish cast to the skin.
  • Eyes may appear cloudy.

Critical note: If multiple fish in a tank simultaneously display clamped fins and rapid breathing, suspect velvet immediately and begin treatment without waiting for visible spots.

Treatment Protocol

Velvet treatment requires a multi-pronged approach combining medication, light deprivation and elevated temperature.

Step 1: Copper-Based Medication

Copper is the most effective treatment for Oodinium. Recommended products include:

  • Seachem Cupramine: A chelated copper treatment that is effective and somewhat safer to dose than ionic copper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions precisely.
  • Copper sulphate (CuSO4): Effective but requires careful dosing and a copper test kit to maintain therapeutic levels (0.15–0.25 ppm free copper).

Step 2: Full Blackout

Because Oodinium is photosynthetic, depriving it of light weakens the parasite significantly and enhances the effectiveness of copper treatment:

  1. Turn off all aquarium lights.
  2. Cover the tank completely with opaque material (black bin bags, thick towels or cardboard).
  3. Block any ambient room light from reaching the tank.
  4. Maintain the blackout for the full duration of the copper treatment (minimum 14 days).

Step 3: Raise Temperature

Increasing the temperature to 30–32°C accelerates the parasite’s life cycle, forcing it through the vulnerable free-swimming stage faster. In Singapore, your tank may already be near this range. Increase aeration to compensate for the reduced oxygen capacity of warmer water.

Step 4: Maintain Treatment

  • Continue treatment for a full 14 days minimum after the last symptom disappears.
  • Perform small water changes (10–15%) as needed during treatment, re-dosing copper proportionally.
  • Remove activated carbon from the filter before treatment (carbon absorbs copper).
  • Keep the filter running for oxygenation and circulation.

After Treatment

  1. Perform a 50% water change.
  2. Add fresh activated carbon to the filter to remove residual copper.
  3. Gradually restore normal lighting over two to three days.
  4. Monitor fish closely for two weeks for any signs of recurrence.

Copper and Invertebrate Safety

Copper is lethal to shrimp, snails and other invertebrates. This is non-negotiable — even trace amounts of copper can kill shrimp within hours.

What You Must Do

  • Remove all shrimp, snails and other invertebrates from the tank before adding any copper-based medication.
  • House invertebrates in a separate, copper-free container for the duration of treatment and for at least one week after activated carbon has been used to remove residual copper.
  • Test copper levels with a reliable test kit before returning invertebrates. Readings should be 0 ppm.
  • Be aware that copper can be absorbed by silicone sealant, substrate and porous rocks, potentially leaching back into the water over time. If possible, treat in a separate hospital tank rather than your main display if you plan to keep shrimp in the future.

Alternative for Shrimp Tanks

If removing invertebrates is not practical (for instance, in a large shrimp breeding colony), consider transferring the fish to a hospital tank for copper treatment instead. The display tank will need to run fish-free for at least three to four weeks (with the lights off for the first two weeks) to allow the Oodinium parasite to die without a host.

Why Full Tank Treatment Is Essential

Like ich, velvet parasites are present throughout the entire aquarium, not just on the visibly affected fish. Free-swimming parasites and encysted reproductive stages exist on the substrate, hardscape, plants and equipment. Treating only the affected fish in a hospital tank while leaving the main tank untreated will result in reinfection when the fish is returned.

You have two options:

  1. Treat the main tank: Medicate the entire display (after removing invertebrates). This is the most thorough approach.
  2. Treat fish in hospital + leave main tank fallow: Move all fish to a hospital tank for copper treatment. Leave the main tank running fish-free with lights off for three to four weeks. The parasites will die without hosts.

Prevention

Preventing velvet is far preferable to treating it. These measures significantly reduce the risk:

  • Quarantine all new fish: A minimum two-week quarantine period is essential. Observe closely for clamped fins, flashing and rapid breathing during this time. Many experienced aquarists prophylactically treat quarantine tanks with a mild copper dose.
  • Maintain excellent water quality: Stress is the primary trigger for velvet outbreaks in fish that may be carrying a low-level infection. Regular water changes with properly dechlorinated PUB water are fundamental.
  • Avoid sudden temperature drops: In Singapore, ensure your tank is not exposed to sudden cooling from air-conditioning, especially overnight.
  • Minimise stress: Overcrowding, aggressive tankmates and poor nutrition all suppress immune function.
  • Dim lighting for new arrivals: Since Oodinium is photosynthetic, keeping lights low during the quarantine period can help suppress any parasites the new fish may be carrying.
  • Do not share equipment: Nets, siphons and buckets used in an infected tank can transfer parasites to other tanks. Dedicate equipment to each tank or sterilise between uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can velvet disease infect humans?

No. Oodinium is an obligate fish parasite and cannot infect humans or other mammals. It is safe to put your hands in a tank with velvet (wearing gloves is always good practice for general hygiene, but the parasite poses no direct risk to you).

Will raising the temperature alone cure velvet?

Unlike ich, heat alone is generally not sufficient to cure velvet. Oodinium is more heat-tolerant than Ichthyophthirius. While elevated temperature speeds up the parasite’s life cycle (which helps medication work faster), copper-based medication is essential for effective treatment. Heat should be used as a complement, not a substitute.

Can I use salt to treat velvet?

Aquarium salt has limited effectiveness against Oodinium. While it may slow the parasite’s reproduction at high concentrations, it is not a reliable standalone treatment. How long can Oodinium survive without fish in the tank?

Because Oodinium can photosynthesise, it can survive longer without a host than most other fish parasites. In a lit tank, encysted forms may persist for several weeks. This is why a blackout is critical during the fallow period — without light, the parasite’s survival time drops to approximately two to three weeks.
