Using Epipremnum Green for Natural Filtration
Epipremnum, the familiar pothos, is not a submerged aquatic but a marvellous emersed helper, and that is exactly how we suggest using it. Let the roots dangle into the water while the leaves grow up and out of the tank, and it becomes a tireless nitrate sponge that pulls excess nutrients straight from the water column. In humid Singapore homes the foliage thrives in the air above the tank, often faster than it would as a houseplant.
It is especially handy perched on the rim of a hang-on-back filter or an open-top aquascape, where the trailing vines soften the hardscape and the roots compete with algae for nitrate. Because the leaves stay dry they shrug off our high ambient temperatures, and there is no need to dose anything extra; the plant simply harvests what your fish produce. Keep the green growth out of strong direct window sun.
