Plakat Betta Care Guide: Short Fins, Big Attitude

This plakat betta care guide covers the care of what many enthusiasts consider the most athletic and resilient form of Betta splendens. The plakat (pronounced pla-KAT) is a short-finned betta that closely resembles the wild-type fish from which all domestic bettas descend. With its compact fins, muscular build and spirited personality, the plakat is a favourite among serious betta keepers. At Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, we stock a variety of plakat bettas and appreciate their blend of natural beauty and robust health. This guide sits inside our broader Tropical Fish Species Master Index reference.

What Makes Plakats Different

The term plakat derives from the Thai word for fighting fish, and these bettas were traditionally bred for vigour and aggression in Thailand. Unlike their long-finned halfmoon and veiltail counterparts, plakats retain the short, functional fins of wild bettas. This gives them superior swimming ability, greater agility and significantly fewer health problems related to fin weight and damage. Modern plakat varieties include traditional solid colours, koi plakats, galaxy plakats and dragon-scale plakats, offering extraordinary visual diversity without the fragility of elaborate finnage.

Tank Size and Setup

While bettas are often marketed for tiny containers, a plakat betta deserves a minimum of 15 litres, with 20 to 40 litres being ideal. Their stronger swimming ability compared to long-finned varieties means they actively use available space. Provide a gentle filter, a heater if your room is air-conditioned, and a secure lid, as plakats are notoriously powerful jumpers. Decorate with live plants such as Java Fern, Anubias and Bucephalandra, along with driftwood or smooth stones. Avoid sharp decorations that could tear fins, though this is less of a concern with plakats than with long-finned bettas.

Water Parameters for Singapore

Plakat bettas thrive in warm water between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, making Singapore’s tropical climate naturally suitable. They prefer a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and soft to moderately hard water with a GH of 3 to 12 dGH. Singapore’s dechlorinated tap water is generally appropriate without modification. Perform weekly water changes of 25 to 30 per cent to maintain water quality. Despite their hardiness, bettas are still sensitive to ammonia and nitrite, so ensure your tank is properly cycled before introducing a plakat.

Diet and Feeding

Plakat bettas are carnivorous surface feeders with voracious appetites. Offer a high-quality betta pellet as the staple diet, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, daphnia and brine shrimp two to three times per week. Live foods such as mosquito larvae are particularly relished and stimulate natural hunting behaviour. Feed two to four pellets twice daily, adjusting based on your fish’s body condition. Plakats are prone to overeating, which can lead to bloating, so one fasting day per week is beneficial.

Temperament and Housing Options

Plakats possess the full territorial aggression characteristic of Betta splendens, often amplified by their greater physical capability. Males must never be housed together. A single male can be kept in a community with carefully chosen tankmates such as corydoras, kuhli loaches, ember tetras or snails. Avoid fin-nipping species and anything resembling another male betta. Female plakats can sometimes be kept in sorority groups of five or more in tanks of 60 litres or larger, though this requires careful monitoring and ample hiding spots.

Health and Common Issues

Plakats are generally healthier than long-finned bettas because their shorter fins are less susceptible to fin rot and tearing. However, they remain vulnerable to common betta ailments including velvet, ich and swim bladder disorder. Maintain clean, warm water and avoid overfeeding to prevent most health problems. Dragon-scale plakats specifically may develop diamond eye, a condition where the thick scaling grows over the eye, impairing vision. This is a genetic trait with no cure, so select specimens carefully.

Breeding Plakat Bettas

Breeding plakats follows the standard betta bubble nest method. The male constructs a bubble nest at the water surface, then embraces the female beneath it during spawning. Eggs float into the nest, where the male tends them exclusively. Remove the female after spawning to prevent aggression. Fry hatch in 24 to 36 hours and become free-swimming within three days. Feed infusoria initially, graduating to baby brine shrimp after a week. Plakats are prolific breeders, and a single spawn can produce 200 or more fry.

The Betta in Its Truest Form

The plakat betta represents Betta splendens at its most natural and vigorous. Its short fins allow unencumbered movement, its body is robust and muscular, and its personality is as bold as any long-finned show betta. For hobbyists who value health, activity and natural beauty over ornamental finnage, the plakat is the definitive choice.
