Otopharynx Lithobates Care Guide: Sulphur-Head Malawi Hap

With its vivid sulphur-yellow blaze and metallic blue flanks, Otopharynx lithobates is one of Lake Malawi’s most visually striking haplochromines. This otopharynx lithobates care guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, Singapore, walks you through housing, feeding, and breeding this mid-sized cichlid. Often sold under the common name Sulphur-Head Hap, it rewards patient keepers with stunning adult colouration that rivals any marine fish.

Origin and Natural Behaviour

Otopharynx lithobates inhabits the rocky-sandy transitional zones of Lake Malawi. It is a sand-sifting insectivore that hovers over the substrate, picking invertebrates from between rocks. In the wild, males establish territories around large boulders and display intensely to passing females. Several geographic colour variants exist, with the Zimbabwe Rock and Mumbo Island forms being the most commonly available in Singapore’s aquarium trade.

Recommended Tank Size

A minimum of 300 litres works for a single male with three to four females. Longer tanks of 120 cm or more suit the species well, giving the male room to establish a territory without cornering tankmates. A mix of sand substrate and scattered rock piles creates the transitional biotope this fish calls home. Leave open sand areas in the foreground so you can watch the natural sifting behaviour, which is one of the species’ most engaging traits.

Water Chemistry

Target a pH of 7.8 to 8.6 and GH of 10-16. Because Singapore tap water comes out soft at GH 2-4, you will need buffering agents. Aragonite sand or a mesh bag of crushed coral in your canister filter handles this effectively. Temperature between 24 and 27 °C is ideal. Most Singapore homes maintain ambient temperatures in this range year-round, so a heater is usually unnecessary unless your room is heavily air-conditioned overnight.

Feeding for Best Colour

A varied diet brings out the best pigmentation. Use a quality cichlid pellet as the staple, supplemented with frozen bloodworms, daphnia, and spirulina flakes. Colour-enhancing foods containing astaxanthin can intensify the yellow head blaze noticeably within a few weeks. Feed two to three small meals daily rather than one large feeding; this mimics natural grazing behaviour and reduces aggression at feeding time. Avoid mammalian proteins such as beef heart, which can cause digestive issues in Malawi haps.

Suitable Tankmates

O. lithobates is relatively peaceful for a Malawi cichlid but should not be housed with aggressive mbuna. Compatible companions include other haplochromines like Placidochromis electra, Copadichromis azureus, and medium-sized Aulonocara species. Avoid keeping it with Otopharynx tetrastigma or other Otopharynx species, as males may hybridise or fight over similar territory. A group ratio of one male to three or four females minimises harassment and lets the male colour up fully.

Breeding

Breeding follows the typical Malawi mouthbrooder pattern. The male selects a flat rock or sandy depression and performs vigorous lateral displays to attract a ripe female. After the egg-spot dance, the female collects 20-50 eggs and incubates them for about 21 days. Holding females should be moved to a separate tank if your community is boisterous. Fry are around 10 mm at release and accept microworms, baby brine shrimp, and finely crushed flake immediately.

Health and Maintenance

Weekly water changes of 30-40% keep nitrate levels low and maintain buffered hardness. Watch for the early signs of Malawi bloat: lethargy, loss of appetite, and white faeces. Good filtration turnover of at least 8-10 times tank volume per hour is recommended for any Malawi community. In Singapore, always use a dechlorinator that handles chloramine, not just chlorine. A well-maintained O. lithobates setup can produce brilliant colour for eight to ten years with consistent care.
