Best Coral Dip Solutions for Pest Removal: Brands Compared
One undipped coral frag can introduce flatworms, Acropora-eating flatworms, nudibranch eggs or red bugs that quietly devastate a reef before you even notice. Choosing the best coral dip solution pest removal product — and using it consistently — is the cheapest insurance your tank will ever have. At Gensou Aquascaping Singapore, we dip every single coral that enters our facility, no exceptions, and after over 20 years of reef keeping we have strong opinions on which dips deliver results.
Why Every Coral Needs a Dip
Pests hitchhike on frag plugs, between polyps and inside skeletal crevices. Visual inspection alone misses eggs, juvenile flatworms and microscopic parasites. A proper dip agitates and expels these hitchhikers before the coral ever touches your display tank. Skipping this step is how established tanks in Singapore suddenly find themselves fighting Acropora-eating flatworms (AEFW) or montipora-eating nudibranches — infestations that can wipe out entire colonies in weeks.
Top Coral Dip Brands Compared
Coral Rx is the industry benchmark. Its iodine-based formula is effective against a broad range of pests and is gentle enough for SPS, LPS and soft corals alike. A 30 ml concentrate bottle costs around $18–$25 locally and treats dozens of frags. Two Little Fishies Revive is another strong performer, particularly favoured for its pleasant citrus scent and rapid action — pests typically bail within five minutes of immersion.
Bayer Advanced Complete Insect Killer (the active ingredient imidacloprid) gained popularity as a budget dip for AEFW and red bugs. It is effective but requires careful dilution — typically 10–15 ml per litre of tank water — and a thorough rinse afterwards. Bayer is not sold as an aquarium product, so dosing responsibility falls entirely on the hobbyist. Brightwell Aquatics MediCoral and Seachem Reef Dip round out the field with iodine-based formulas that are widely available on Shopee and at marine shops along Serangoon North.
How to Dip Corals Properly
Fill a clean container with 1–2 litres of tank water at matching temperature and salinity. Add the dip solution according to the manufacturer’s instructions — typically 20–30 drops of Coral Rx per litre. Submerge the coral and gently agitate it with a turkey baster for 5–10 minutes. You will often see pests, mucus and debris release into the water. After the dip, transfer the coral to a second container of clean tank water for a 2–3 minute rinse before placing it in your display or quarantine tank.
Never reuse dip water. The expelled pests and toxins contaminate the solution, reducing effectiveness and risking cross-contamination.
Dipping SPS Versus Soft Corals
SPS corals tolerate most dip solutions well, but keep the immersion time to 10 minutes or less. Soft corals — particularly Xenia, Sinularia and zoanthids — can be more sensitive. Reduce the concentration by 25–30 % for soft corals on the first dip and observe the reaction. If the coral retracts completely and does not reopen within an hour of being placed back in tank water, the concentration was too high.
Zoanthids deserve extra caution because they contain palytoxin. Always wear gloves and eye protection when handling zoanthids during dipping, and work in a well-ventilated area.
Quarantine as a Second Line of Defence
Dipping removes visible pests and dislodges eggs, but some parasites survive a single treatment. A two-to-four-week quarantine period with repeated dips at days one, seven and fourteen catches anything the first round missed. A simple 40-litre quarantine tank with a small heater, powerhead and basic LED light is all you need. Many Singapore reefers set up a quarantine tub on a shelf inside their fish room — minimal space, maximum protection.
Signs You Have a Pest Problem
Tissue recession at the base of SPS colonies, bite marks on Montipora edges, unexplained polyp retraction, or tiny translucent worms visible under blue light at night — all red flags. If you spot these, remove affected corals, dip them immediately and inspect surrounding colonies. Early detection limits the spread and saves you from having to dip your entire collection.
Building a Dipping Routine
Make dipping non-negotiable. Every new coral, every frag swap, every piece from a fellow hobbyist — dip it. Keep your preferred dip solution, a turkey baster, two clean containers and a pair of gloves in a dedicated dipping kit. The five minutes you spend per coral beats the months you would spend eradicating an established pest population.
