ADA Fertiliser System Guide: Brighty K, Green Brighty and Step Series

Aqua Design Amano’s fertiliser lineup is elegant but can be confusing to newcomers who encounter a wall of similar-looking bottles with cryptic names. This ADA fertiliser system guide breaks down each product, explains when to use it, and offers practical dosing advice for Singapore conditions. We have stocked and used ADA products at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, Singapore, since the early days of the Nature Aquarium movement, and the system delivers outstanding results when applied correctly.

The ADA Fertiliser Philosophy

ADA’s approach centres on substrate-based nutrition supplemented by targeted water column dosing. Unlike all-in-one fertilisers that dump everything into the water, ADA separates nutrients into distinct products so aquarists can adjust individual elements based on plant demand. The system assumes you are using ADA Amazonia aquasoil, which provides a rich nitrogen and nutrient base in the substrate during the first several months.

This philosophy means ADA liquid fertilisers intentionally omit or minimise nitrogen and phosphorus, relying on fish waste and aquasoil to supply these macronutrients. The liquid products focus instead on potassium, iron, and trace elements — the nutrients most likely to become limiting in a planted tank with active substrate.

Brighty K: The Daily Essential

Brighty K is a potassium supplement and the cornerstone of the ADA liquid range. Potassium is consumed in large quantities by aquatic plants but is not adequately supplied by fish waste or most substrates. Dose 1 pump (1 ml) per 20 litres daily. For a standard 60-litre tank, that means 3 pumps each day.

Brighty K also contains a small amount of organic acid that helps maintain mildly acidic conditions preferred by most planted tank species. At roughly $25-35 SGD for a 180 ml bottle, it is the single most important ADA liquid product and the one we recommend every ADA system user purchase first.

Green Brighty Mineral: Iron and Traces

Green Brighty Mineral supplies iron and essential trace elements including manganese, boron, zinc, copper, and molybdenum. Iron is critical for chlorophyll production and is the trace element most rapidly depleted in planted tanks, particularly under strong lighting with CO2 injection. Dose 1 pump per 20 litres daily, ideally in the morning when photosynthesis is ramping up.

Symptoms of iron deficiency include pale or yellowish new growth (older leaves remain green) and reduced red colouration in species like Rotala rotundifolia and Alternanthera reineckii. If these signs appear despite regular dosing, increase to 1.5 pumps per 20 litres.

Green Brighty Nitrogen and Green Brighty Phosphorus

These two products fill the gap when aquasoil ages and fish bioload is insufficient. Fresh ADA Amazonia releases substantial ammonium during its first two to three months, making additional nitrogen unnecessary — and potentially dangerous if it triggers algae. As the soil matures and its nitrogen reserve depletes, Green Brighty Nitrogen becomes relevant.

Dose Green Brighty Nitrogen at 1 pump per 20 litres when nitrate readings consistently fall below 5 ppm. Green Brighty Phosphorus follows the same logic — dose only when phosphate drops below 0.5 ppm. In Singapore, where most hobbyists maintain modest fish stocks in planted tanks, nitrogen supplementation typically becomes necessary around the six to twelve month mark.

The Step Series (Step 1, Step 2, Step 3)

ADA’s Step series is a time-based trace element system designed to match the changing needs of an aquarium as it matures. Step 1 is used during months 1-3 after setup, providing a formulation suited to new aquasoil conditions with higher organic acid content. Step 2 covers months 3-12, shifting the mineral balance for an established system. Step 3 is the long-term maintenance formula for tanks older than one year.

In practice, many experienced aquarists — ourselves included — find the Step series somewhat redundant if you are already using Green Brighty Mineral. The Step products serve a similar function with slightly different formulations. If budget is a consideration, Green Brighty Mineral alone covers trace element needs adequately. The Step series is a refinement for those who want to follow the ADA system precisely.

Substrate Supplements

Beyond liquids, the ada fertiliser system guide should mention substrate products. Power Sand placed beneath aquasoil provides long-term nutrient release and promotes bacterial colonisation. Bacter 100 and Clear Super are additives mixed into the substrate during setup to establish beneficial microbial populations. Multi Bottom is a solid fertiliser stick pushed into the substrate near heavy root feeders — think of it as ADA’s version of root tabs, priced at around $15-20 SGD for a pack of 24 sticks.

Iron Bottom and Tourmaline BC are specialised substrate supplements for iron-demanding plants and mineral supplementation respectively. These are niche products that most hobbyists will not need.

Practical Dosing Tips for Singapore

Singapore’s warm water temperatures (28-30 degrees Celsius without a chiller) accelerate plant metabolism, meaning nutrient uptake can be higher than what ADA’s recommended doses assume — their guidelines are calibrated for 24-25 degree tanks typical in Japanese homes. You may need to dose 20-30 per cent above the label recommendation during peak growth periods.

PUB tap water contributes very little in terms of minerals (GH 2-4), so the calcium and magnesium that some fertiliser systems take for granted are essentially absent. Consider supplementing GH to 4-6 degrees with a remineraliser alongside your ADA products.

Store ADA fertilisers away from direct sunlight and heat. Singapore’s climate can degrade liquid fertilisers faster than in temperate countries — a cool cupboard or air-conditioned room extends shelf life significantly. If you need help tailoring an ADA dosing schedule to your specific tank, bring your setup details to our shop at Everton Park and we will work out a plan with you.
