Tropheus Brichardi Care Guide: Chocolate Tropheus
Often confused with Neolamprologus brichardi by newcomers despite belonging to a completely different genus, Tropheus brichardi is the slate-and-chocolate variant from northern Lake Tanganyika that long-time hobbyists either love for its understated colouring or skip entirely for that same reason. A working tropheus brichardi care guide needs to address the same colony dynamics, hardwater chemistry and herbivore diet as the more famous Kasanga reds, with a few quirks of its own. This guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park covers what we have learned setting up brichardi colonies in Singapore HDB and condo apartments.
Identifying True T. brichardi
Described by Poll in 1946, Tropheus brichardi originates from the northwest Tanganyikan shoreline near Uvira and the Burundi coast. Adults reach 12 to 14 cm with chocolate-brown bodies, faint vertical bars and a subtle blue dorsal flash that intensifies during display. The species is commonly confused with the unrelated featherfin Neolamprologus brichardi, so always confirm scientific name and source locality before purchase. Look for fish labelled with locality such as Bemba or Kalemie for known wild lineages.
Tank Size and Colony Dynamics
Plan for a minimum 150 cm tank around 450 to 500 litres housing twelve to fifteen fish. Brichardi shows similar single-male tyranny patterns as other Tropheus when colony numbers fall below ten, so resist the temptation to start small and grow into the species. Larger 180 cm setups with twenty fish let subdominants disperse along the rock face. Smaller experimental groups invariably end with one or two survivors after the dominant male picks them off over several months.
Water Chemistry on Singapore Tap
Tanganyika baseline is pH 8.6 to 9.0, kH 16 to 19 and GH 11 to 14. Soft, slightly acidic PUB tap requires remineralisation at every water change using a buffered cichlid mineral mix, ideally over an aragonite or crushed coral substrate that resists pH downshifts. The gh kh aquarium guide walks through the test sequence, and our calcium chloride remineralise guide covers the specific dosing recipe we use. Hold parameters steady; weekly drift damages fish more than slightly off-target stable values.
Aquascape and Hardscape Choice
Build a continuous rocky escarpment along the back glass using lava rock, ocean rock or pagoda stone, leaving open sand foreground for grazing patrols. Crevices should be wide enough for one fish only; large caves invite pair bonding by subdominant males which destabilises the colony. Our lake tanganyika rocky shore setup details a layout that disperses territory rather than concentrating it. Skip driftwood, as tannins work against your buffering effort.
Filtration and Water Movement
Brichardi produces high quantities of plant-fibre waste, so robust mechanical and biological filtration is essential. Run two large canisters such as Eheim Pro 4+ 600 plus a Fluval FX4 plumbed to opposite ends, hitting eight to ten times turnover per hour. Direct outflow along the rock face to oxygenate and mimic Tanganyikan wave surge. Dissolved oxygen above 7 mg/L is critical for this species; the best aquarium canister filter guide covers brand options at the SG price points.
Herbivore Diet and Bloat Prevention
This is where most colonies fail. Brichardi grazes aufwuchs from rocks in the wild and has a short, simple gut intolerant of high-protein foods. Bloodworm, beef heart and protein-rich pellets cause bacterial dysbiosis leading to bloat. Stick to spirulina flake, NLS Algaemax pellets, blanched courgette and weekly Repashy Soilent Green. Feed small amounts twice daily; the colony should clear food in under two minutes. Our dedicated tropheus bloat prevention care guide details warning signs and emergency protocol.
Chiller Sizing for Singapore
Tanganyika sits at 24 to 27°C, but ambient SG flat temperatures push tanks toward 30°C without active cooling. A 500 litre brichardi colony needs a 1/3 HP chiller minimum, sized through the calculation in our chiller sizing singapore climate guide. Skipping the chiller pushes oxygen below safe levels and creates the chronic stress that triggers bloat outbreaks. Budget around $800 to $1,200 SGD for an appropriate unit plus higher monthly electricity than typical planted setups.
Tank Mates and Colony Compatibility
Treat brichardi as essentially single-species. Bottom-dwelling synodontis catfish such as S. petricola or S. multipunctatus are the only reliable companions, occupying a different stratum and sharing the hardwater requirement. Avoid other Tropheus species which hybridise readily and devalue lineage, and avoid Mbuna which steal grazing territory. The lake tanganyika featherfin synodontis guide covers compatible synodontis selection.
Sourcing in Singapore
F1 brichardi appears intermittently at C328 Clementi and through specialist Carousell breeders, priced around $50 to $90 per juvenile. F2 captive-bred fish at $25 to $50 acclimate more readily to local PUB water than wild imports. Be wary of generic “chocolate Tropheus” labels without locality information. Our c328 clementi aquarium shop guide notes shipment patterns for African cichlids.
Quarantine Before Colony Introduction
New brichardi need three to four weeks in a separate quarantine tank with parameters matching the display, plus a prophylactic round of metronidazole to clear latent Hexamita. Drip acclimate over two hours to bridge water chemistry differences. The aquarium metronidazole treatment guide covers dosing protocol, and our freshwater quarantine protocol new fish walks through the four-week workflow we recommend before any introduction.
