50 Gallon Tank Stocking Options Guide
This 50 gallon tank stocking options guide gives you eight complete stocking plans tested at Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park on 91 x 46 x 48 cm (~189 L) builds. Rather than list species abstractly, each plan shows a cohesive community with counts, tank roles and Singapore sourcing notes.
The 189 L Bioload Budget
A conservative rule: 1 cm adult fish per 1.5 L in a planted tank. That’s roughly 125 cm of fish, or 60 small tetras, or 30 medium community fish. Heavy planting plus canister filtration at 6x turnover lets you push 10-15% above this safely.
Plan 1: Amazon Blackwater Community
20 cardinal tetras, 12 sterbai corydoras, 1 angelfish pair, 15 amano shrimp. Plants: amazon sword, crypt wendtii, anubias on driftwood. Peat-tinted water. Budget SGD $180 fish + $40 plants.
Plan 2: Southeast Asian Biotope
20 harlequin rasboras, 10 kuhli loaches, 3 pearl gouramis, 2 Otocinclus. Plants: cryptocoryne species, java fern, bolbitis. Browning leaves add to the mood. SGD $160 fish.
Plan 3: Dwarf Cichlid Feature
1 male + 3 female apistogramma cacatuoides, 20 ember tetras, 10 pygmy corydoras, cherry shrimp colony. Plants: tiger lotus centre, crypts midground. The apistos breed readily. See our apistogramma breeding guide. SGD $200 fish.
Plan 4: Peaceful Community Classic
15 rummynose tetras, 10 neon tetras, 6 sterbai corydoras, 3 honey gouramis, 10 amano shrimp. Works with any planted layout. SGD $140 fish.
Plan 5: Livebearer Colony
10 endler’s livebearers (mixed sex), 8 platies, 6 corydoras panda, 3 Otocinclus. Higher GH preferred — add crushed coral to filter. Babies are free fish food for the otocinclus overflow. SGD $100 fish.
Plan 6: Rainbowfish Showcase
8 boesemani rainbowfish, 8 turquoise rainbowfish, 10 congo tetras, 6 sterbai cory. Colour under Chihiros WRGB II 60 is genuinely spectacular. SGD $240 fish.
Plan 7: Shrimp-Dominant Planted
80 cherry shrimp + 30 amano shrimp + 20 ember tetras + 1 honey gourami. Low bioload, heavy plant mass, ideal for weekly-maintenance only. SGD $140 fish + shrimp.
Plan 8: Discus Attempt (Advanced)
4 juvenile discus growing to 3-4 adults, 15 rummynose, 6 sterbai. Requires 30°C constant, RO-blended water, and daily 30% water changes for juveniles. Not a beginner plan. Detailed in our discus primer. SGD $400-$800 fish.
Stocking Mistakes to Avoid
Mixing tiger barbs with long-finned species. Adding bala sharks or common plecos. Keeping two male angelfish (territorial). Single corydoras or kuhli instead of groups of 6+. Our common stocking errors covers the full list.
Every plan above assumes at least 60% of tank surface planted — vallisneria, crypts, anubias, stem midground. This buffers ammonia spikes and visually softens species boundaries. Light planting cuts safe stocking by 30%.
