Mid Size Tank Filter Sizing Guide: 30 to 75 Gallon
This mid size tank filter sizing guide is built for Singapore aquarists running 30 to 75 gallon tanks and helps you match filter turnover to stocking, aquascape flow, and HDB apartment noise tolerance. Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park benchmarks canister, HOB, and sump setups weekly across this size bracket.
Turnover Rule of Thumb
Target 4-6x tank volume per hour for planted and community setups, and 6-8x for cichlid or messy eater tanks. For a 30 gal (114 L) that is 450-900 L/hr, for a 55 gal (208 L) that is 830-1,650 L/hr, and for a 75 gal (284 L) that is 1,100-2,200 L/hr. Published filter ratings are unloaded; derate 25-35% once media is installed.
Canister Filter Recommendations
For 30-40 gallon, Fluval 307 ($260) or Eheim Classic 2215 ($200) handle the range cleanly. For 55 gallon, Eheim 2217 ($280) or Oase Biomaster 250 ($420). For 75 gallon, Eheim 2073 ($540), Oase Biomaster 350 ($480), or Fluval 407 ($370). See our planted setup guide for flow integration.
Canister vs HOB for Mid Size
Canisters win for silent operation, larger media volume, and aquascape aesthetics. HOBs win on price, easy maintenance, and shallow tank clearance.
HOB Filter Recommendations
AquaClear 70 rated 1,135 L/hr for 30-50 gallon ($115). AquaClear 110 rated 2,080 L/hr for 55-110 gallon ($170). Seachem Tidal 55 and 110 offer superior surface skimmer action at similar prices. Ideal for fish-only or low-tech planted tanks and when you want no tubing visible. Less suitable for very tall 75 gal tanks because the intake depth is limited.
Sumps for 75 Gallon
For 75 gal cichlid or heavy community, a custom 60 x 30 x 40 cm sump with Eheim 1250 or Jebao DCT-6000 return pump outperforms any canister. Budget $400-$600 for glass sump + plumbing + return pump. Integrated overflow box needs $120-$180. See our cichlid guide for bioload context.
Media Configuration
Layer coarse sponge (mechanical), fine floss (polishing), ceramic rings + Matrix or Siporax (biological), and optional purigen or carbon bag. For a 75 gal canister, target 2-3 L of biological media total. Rinse mechanical media fortnightly in tank water, never tap.
Flow Pattern and Lily Pipes
Use 17 mm or 25 mm glass or stainless lily pipes for planted aquascapes. Set outflow to ripple the surface gently; pair with skimmer inlet for CO2 retention during lights-on. Our 75 gallon planted guide details full piping layouts.
Noise and HDB Considerations
Canisters in a cabinet measure 28-35 dB at 1 m, below fridge noise. HOBs average 40-45 dB depending on water level; keep the tank topped to prevent trickle noise. Sumps need sound insulation foam around the overflow weir to stay below 40 dB.
Power and Cost of Running
Canisters draw 12-25W, HOBs 5-10W, sump pumps 25-45W. At Singapore tariffs around $0.30/kWh, expect $3-$12 per month on filtration alone. Dual-canister 75 gal cichlid runs closer to $10-$14 monthly.
