Hints

The umbrella hairgrass, as it is also known, is a delicate grass for the background. It has been known in aquatics for a long time, but only thanks to wonderful aquascaping layouts has this swamp plant, which forms runners, caught the attention again. The plants create the best effect when planted in large groups behind a stone structure or with other delicate stem plants. The species name vivipara: viviparous, comes from the runners on the blade tips.

Eleocharis Vivipara, the umbrella hairgrass

Eleocharis vivipara is a taller, more theatrical relative of the dwarf hairgrasses, sending up fine reed-like blades that arch and, true to its name, sprout plantlets at their tips. We use it for delicate background and midground groups, especially behind a stone arrangement where the wispy fountain effect adds softness and depth. Planted in generous clumps it reads as a graceful grassy thicket rather than scattered blades.

It is a runner-spreading marsh plant that does well in our warm 27-29C tanks without a heater and accepts Singapore’s soft tap water once dechlorinated. Good light keeps it upright and encourages the viviparous plantlets that let you propagate it for free; simply detach and replant them. While it grows in low-tech setups, brighter light and CO2 give the fullest, most vigorous stands.
