Ludwigia repens ‘Rubin’ is one of the easiest red background stems to keep, which is exactly why we recommend it to hobbyists making their first move into coloured plants. The leaves run wine-red to deep ruby, giving a planted tank instant warmth and depth at the rear. Supplied here as a TC cup, it arrives clean and free of snails, algae and pests, ready to plant straight into a shrimp tank.

Tissue-cultured stock starts soft, so let it convert to its submerged form over the first couple of weeks before judging it. In Singapore’s warm 27-29C water and soft, slightly acidic tap supply it roots and runs quickly; no heater is required. It colours best under bright light with iron dosing, and CO2 will thicken the group, though Rubin stays cooperative even in moderately lit tanks.
