Description

Limnobium Laevigatum

Aquarium plant from tissue culture in closed cup.
Limnobium laevigatum from South America is a decorative floating plant that is particularly suitable for open aquariums.
1-5 cm tall and leaves from 5-15 cm wide.
It is also good in traditional aquariums, because the fine, long and decorative roots provide protection to gouramies and other surface fish that like the roots of floating plants.
If there are enough nutrients in the water and the light intensity is good, new leaves will appear above the water surface.
It may become necessary to remove some to avoid that the plants beneath it still gets some light.
When the nutrient level in the water decreases, it will grow much slower which makes it a great indicator of the available nutrients

Limnobium laevigatum (frogbit) for Singapore open-top tanks

Amazon frogbit is a favourite among local keepers running open-top rimless tanks, and the 1-2-Grow! cup gives you a clean, pest-free starting culture rather than a mat that might carry hitchhikers. The long, trailing roots are the real draw: they hang down into the water column and give gouramis, bettas and other surface-loving fish the cover they instinctively seek, which is handy in many Singapore community tanks.

It is fast-growing and an excellent nutrient sponge, soaking up the excess that fuels algae, so we often suggest it to hobbyists battling green water in bright rooms. The catch in our climate is the same speed: it multiplies quickly and will blanket the surface, blocking light to plants below, so plan to thin it weekly. Keep humidity off the leaves by leaving a gap under any lid, since trapped condensation can scorch the emersed tops.
