Spirodela polyrrhiza (giant duckweed) for Singapore tanks
Spirodela polyrrhiza is a fast-growing floating plant supplied here as a clean 1-2-Grow! culture, which is a real advantage: starting from a pest-free portion means you avoid importing the snails and algae that often ride in on duckweed from other tanks. Its larger fronds and trailing roots make a useful surface layer that shades the tank and gives bettas and gouramis somewhere to feel secure, a popular pairing in local community setups.
It is a low-light, low-CO2 plant that earns its keep as a nutrient sponge, pulling excess out of the water to help starve algae, which suits bright Singapore rooms prone to green water. The trade-off is its speed: it multiplies quickly and will cover the surface, so plan on scooping out handfuls each week to keep light reaching the plants below. Leave an air gap under any lid so condensation doesn’t scald the floating fronds.
