Helanthium Tenellum ‘Green’ as a Singapore Carpet

This is our go-to grassy carpet for hobbyists who want a lawn without committing to a full high-tech rig. The narrow, fresh-green blades stay vivid even under strong light, and the plant spreads briskly by runners once it roots in. As a tissue-culture cup it arrives clean of snails, algae and pesticides, so it slots straight into a shrimp tank or a planted nano on an apartment shelf.

Spread is everything here, so plant small portions a few centimetres apart and let the runners stitch the gaps. It is among the more forgiving carpets in our warm 27-29C water, tolerating moderate light, though CO2 and a nutritious substrate produce a denser, faster lawn. Trim the tallest blades occasionally to keep the carpet low and encourage horizontal growth across the front glass.

See related grassy options in our foreground plants range. Compare it against other lawns in our carpet plant comparison, and if growth stalls early, our dry start method is a reliable way to establish it.
