Pogostemon Helferi On Wood
Pogostemon helferi on lava stone.
Aquarists in Thailand, close to the border with Burma, discovered this plant. It is called ‘Downoi’ (little star) in Thailand, and it is easy to see why (5-10 cm tall and wide).
Pogostemon helferi is an unusual and distinctive aquatic plant with a compact habit, curly leaves and a strikingly beautiful green colour.
With good light conditions and a nutrient-rich substrate, Pogostemon helferi forms many side shoots that develop small roots, and the plant rapidly forms an impressive carpet of foreground vegetation.

Pogostemon helferi ‘Downoi’ on wood for Singapore tanks
This piece gives you Pogostemon helferi already attached to lava stone, so the distinctive curly, star-shaped ‘Downoi’ rosettes are pre-anchored and ready to drop into a scape. For local aquascapers it removes the tricky early stage where loose Downoi can lift off or rot before it roots, and the lava stone integrates neatly into a hardscape arrangement of rock and wood.
Downoi rewards good light and a nutrient-rich substrate by throwing out many side shoots that develop their own roots, eventually forming a low carpet of crinkled green stars. It does best with some added CO2 and benefits from iron-rich feeding to keep the colour bright. In our warm 27-29C tanks growth is steady, so trim and replant the offshoots to fill out the foreground, and keep flow moving across the rosettes to fend off algae on the textured leaves.
