Description

Utricularia graminifolia from Asia belongs to the bladderwort family. All the plants in this family are insect eating, perennial water and marsh plants. Bladder traps are a unique feature of this family, which Utricularia graminifolia forms after a short period of time in the aquarium. The species name means ‘with grass like leaves’ and the fresh green leaves after a short period of time form a pretty mat which looks like a lawn (2-8 cm tall). Utricularia graminifolia is therefore an ideal foreground plant.

1-2-GROW!
Small plants with great success. 1•2•Grow! Are very young plants cultivated and delivered directly from our laboratory. The plants are guaranteed to be free from snails, algae and pesticides and therefore are totally harmless for sensitive shrimp and fish. The range offers unique plants!
Success with your aquarium depends largely on the proper plant choice. In a 1•2•Grow! cup you buy a myriad of plants which can be divided into small portions and cover a larger area. Plants are compact from the start so you will experience a dense and beautiful growth, if you give them the right fertiliser and CO2 from the start! The range is perfect for small and medium sized aquariums, and your patience will be rewarded…
The range offers several mosses and specialties such as Rotala macrandra, Rotala ‘Bonsai’ and mini versions of traditional varieties such as Alternanthera and Eleocharis.

Carefully take the plant out of the cup and rinse off the growing media under the tap.

Split the plant in 6-8 portions using your fingers or sharp scissors (for small foreground plants).

Plant portions into the substrate using tweezers. Then watch them grow!

Growing Utricularia graminifolia carpets in Singapore tanks

We sell a lot of UG to scapers chasing that fine, fluffy lawn, and in our experience the species rewards patience over rushing. The 1-2-Grow! cup gives you sterile, pest-free portions you can split into small clumps and tweezer in close together across the front glass. Pressed firmly into a nutrient substrate, the clumps knit into a continuous mat as the runners spread sideways rather than tall.

Local water plays in your favour here: our tap supply trends soft and slightly acidic once dechlorinated, which UG generally prefers. The bigger battle is melt during transition, so keep flow gentle, lighting moderate, and resist the urge to trim until the carpet has anchored. Good water movement across the foreground stops detritus settling into the dense mat and helps the lawn stay clean and green rather than patchy.

UG is one of the more rewarding plants in our foreground plants range. Pair it with steady injection using our aquarium CO2 guide, or read how to grow carpet without CO2 and our Utricularia graminifolia care guide first.
