In 1991 when we launched ®Hikari Tropical Algae Wafers™, no other food existed to help keep plecostomus healthy. There were many reports of Plecostomus getting thinner with each passing day. To address this problem, Hikari began researching raw materials and production techniques to develop potential diets. After considerable experimentation, we developed the best ingredient formulation possible. Next we had to develop a pellet the fish would eat, one that wouldn’t dissolve in water and allowed the nutrition to be accessed readily. Feeding Hikari Algae Wafers in Singapore Tanks

In Singapore’s warm aquariums — most run at 27–29°C without a heater — bottom feeders have a faster metabolism and graze more often than fish in temperate tanks. We find one wafer per two to three bottom-feeding fish each evening after lights-out works well for the plecos, bristlenose plecos and corydoras popular in the local hobby. Drop the wafer near the fish’s usual hiding spot so shy grazers feed without competing with mid-water tetras.

Because our tap water is soft and warm, leftover food breaks down quickly and can fuel algae. Put in only what clears within a couple of hours, and pair feeding with the live algae-eaters and clean-up crew covered in our aquarium algae-eaters guide. The wafers sink fast and hold together without clouding the water, so they suit planted and shrimp tanks where you want to spot-feed a specific corner.
