MALAWI CHIPS multi-ingredient food for Malawi cichlids of the mbuna group. MALAWI CHIPS is a multi-ingredient food in the form of tiny, slowly sinking chips for Malawi cichlids of the mbuna group and other herbivorous cichlids. A diversified formula ensures excellent condition and splendid coloration in fish. The size and shape of the chips are adjusted to cichlids’ mouths, hence promote active feeding and proper chewing of the food. Fibre and nettle regulate digestion.
The food contains various sources of easily assimilable vegetable protein, such as green pea and spirulina. Kelp algae (Ascophyllum nodosum), rich in natural mineral salts (including iodine) and vitamins, improve fish’s immunity. Wheat germs provide valuable unsaturated fatty acids. L-carnitine addition encourages fat metabolism.

Feeding Malawi Chips to Mbuna in Singapore Tanks

Mbuna are grazers by nature, and here in Singapore we see plenty of hobbyists rotating these sinking veg chips into rocky Malawi setups. Because they descend slowly, the chips reach mid-water and bottom feeders without fouling the surface, which matters in our warm 27-29C tanks where uneaten food breaks down fast. We suggest feeding small amounts two to three times daily so every fish in a busy mbuna colony gets a fair share.

Plant-based formulas suit herbivorous cichlids whose digestive systems struggle with overly meaty diets, a common cause of bloat in local tanks. The chip size lets adult mbuna crunch comfortably while smaller juveniles nibble the edges. We dose modestly and watch that everything is consumed within a couple of minutes, since leftover food in heaterless community tanks at our ambient temperatures can spike nitrates quickly between water changes.

Pair this with stable parameters and good grazing surfaces for best colour. Browse our wider general fish food range, and if you keep an active rockwork colony our mbuna rock tank aquascape and yellow lab cichlid care guides are worth a read.
