Hygrophila Difformis (Water Wisteria) for SG Beginners
Hygrophila difformis, commonly known as water wisteria, is one of the most forgiving stem plants we recommend to hobbyists starting their first planted tank in Singapore. Its lacy, finely divided leaves give a soft, full look, and it grows fast enough to outcompete early algae blooms while a new tank cycles. It happily takes our soft, slightly acidic tap water and the ambient 27-29C most homes sit at, so no heater is needed to keep it pushing growth.
That speed is its main upkeep demand: expect to trim often. We cut the tops and replant them, and each cutting roots within days to thicken the stand. It can grow rooted in substrate or left floating, where the leaf shape often changes and finer foliage shades the tank below. Give it decent light and a little liquid fertiliser and it stays compact and bright; starve it and lower leaves thin out and yellow over time.
It also pulls nitrates down nicely in lightly stocked tanks. See our full live plants range, and read the Hygrophila difformis care guide and water wisteria care guide for propagation tips.
