Growing Ludwigia sp. Haerocarpa in Singapore planted tanks

This Ludwigia is a stem plant grown for the warm reddish and bronze tones it develops in the midground and background of a planted layout. Like the wider Ludwigia genus, it rewards strong lighting and steady CO2 with deeper colour and tighter growth, while shaded or low-tech tanks tend to keep it greener and leggier. We grow ours in a nutrient-rich substrate and trim regularly to keep the stems bushy.

For SG aquascapers, the practical note is that our soft, slightly acidic tap water actually suits stem plants well, so the bigger levers on colour are light intensity, iron-rich dosing and consistent CO2 rather than water hardness. Plant the stems with a little spacing so light reaches the lower leaves, and replant the healthy tops you trim to thicken the stand over a few weeks of regular maintenance.
