Monstera Adansonii (Pot) for Aquariums and Paludariums
Monstera Adansonii, the Swiss cheese plant, brings dramatic fenestrated leaves to a setup, and in the aquarium hobby it’s grown emersed: roots in the water, foliage climbing out above. Used this way it pulls nitrate and excess nutrients from the water column, helping keep algae in check, while the submerged roots offer shelter for shrimp and small fish. It’s a popular choice for open-top tanks and paludarium backdrops where its trailing, climbing habit can be shown off.
It thrives in Singapore’s warm, humid conditions and is undemanding once established, though it appreciates something to climb, like cork or wood, in a paludarium. Keep only the roots submerged; the leaves are terrestrial and will rot if held underwater. Give it moderate ambient light, trim to shape, and let the aerial roots grip your hardscape for a lush emergent look.
