Syngonanthus sp. ‘Belem’ for the Advanced Aquascaper

‘Belem’ is one of those eriocaulon-relatives that separates casual planted tanks from dialled-in aquascapes. The pot gives you a generous clump of fine, grassy crowns that you split into individual rosettes before planting. We rate it as demanding: it wants stable, nutrient-rich conditions and shows stress quickly, so it is best added once your tank has matured rather than during the first messy weeks of a new setup.

Soft, low-hardness water is the big lever, and Singapore tap water already runs soft, which helps. Keep general and carbonate hardness low, dose iron and trace consistently, and run pressurised CO2 with strong light to bring out the silvery-white flowering heads. Our ambient 27-29C is fine, though very warm tanks can stall it, so heat-soaked HDB rooms may benefit from a fan or chiller on sensitive scapes.

For technique, see our eriocaulon care guide and eriocaulon species guide, plus inspiration in eriocaulon-only aquascapes. Find more in our live plants collection.
