Ludwigia Super Red Care Guide: The Deepest Red Stem Plant
If you have ever scrolled through planted tank photos and wondered how aquascapers achieve those impossibly deep crimson stems, there is a good chance you were looking at Ludwigia palustris ‘Super Red’. Among the many red stem plants available in Singapore, this one stands out for delivering intense colour without the extreme demands of more finicky species.
At Gensou, we have been growing and selling Ludwigia Super Red for over two decades. It remains one of our most recommended red plants for hobbyists who want dramatic colour without the steep learning curve. This guide covers everything you need to know to keep it thriving in Singapore’s warm-water conditions.
What Is Ludwigia Super Red?
Ludwigia palustris ‘Super Red’ is a selectively cultivated variant of the North American species Ludwigia palustris. Unlike the wild form, which tends toward olive-green with reddish undersides, this cultivar has been bred to display deep, saturated red across the entire leaf surface — top and bottom.
The plant grows in an upright stem formation with opposite, ovate leaves. Under good conditions, it develops a compact, bushy habit that looks stunning when planted in groups of five or more stems. Mature stems can reach 30–40 cm in height, making it suitable for the midground to background of most aquariums.
Why It Stands Out Among Red Stem Plants
Many red aquarium plants carry an asterisk: they only display red colouration under very high light, generous CO2 injection and precise nutrient dosing. Ludwigia Super Red is different. While it certainly responds to high light with even more intense colour, it maintains a respectable red hue under moderate lighting — roughly 40–60 micromoles PAR at the substrate level.
This makes it one of the most forgiving red stem plants available, and arguably the best starting point for Singapore hobbyists who want to add red to their tanks without investing in pressurised CO2 systems straight away.
Care Requirements
| Parameter | Recommended Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Light | Moderate to high (40–100+ PAR) | Higher light = deeper red |
| CO2 | Helpful but not essential | Grows without; CO2 improves density |
| Temperature | 22–30 °C | Handles SG ambient (28–32 °C) well |
| pH | 6.0–7.5 | Flexible; slightly acidic preferred |
| GH | 3–12 dGH | Tolerates SG tap water hardness |
| Substrate | Nutrient-rich preferred | Aquasoil ideal; inert with root tabs works |
| Growth Rate | Moderate to fast | Faster with CO2 and strong light |
Light
Moderate light is sufficient to keep Ludwigia Super Red alive and reasonably coloured. However, if you want that deep, almost burgundy-wine red that makes this plant famous, aim for higher light output. Under low light, the plant may revert to more brownish-red or even greenish tones at the lower portions of the stem.
In Singapore, many hobbyists run LED fixtures on timers for 7–8 hours per day. This works well for Ludwigia Super Red, provided the fixture delivers adequate intensity at your tank depth.
CO2
Here is the good news: Ludwigia Super Red grows perfectly well without CO2 injection. It will be slower and slightly less compact, but it will still display red colouration. If you do run pressurised CO2, aim for 20–30 ppm for optimal growth. The difference is noticeable — stems become denser, internodal spacing tightens, and the overall bush looks far more lush.
Water Conditions in Singapore
Singapore’s tap water, treated with chloramine by PUB, needs dechlorination before use — a standard water conditioner handles this. The slightly soft to moderate hardness of our tap water (typically 3–5 dGH) suits Ludwigia Super Red nicely. Our ambient temperatures of 28–32 °C are within the plant’s tolerance range, though it grows more compactly in slightly cooler water. If you run a chiller for other reasons, this plant will benefit.
Iron Supplementation for Deeper Reds
Iron is the single most important micronutrient for red plant colouration. Ludwigia Super Red responds strongly to iron supplementation, displaying noticeably deeper reds when iron is available in adequate quantities.
You can supplement iron through:
- Liquid fertilisers — most comprehensive liquid fertilisers contain iron, but dedicated iron supplements (chelated iron, preferably DTPA or EDDHA for stability at lower pH) provide a targeted boost.
- Root tabs — since Ludwigia Super Red is a strong root feeder, iron-rich root tabs placed near the base of stem groups are highly effective.
- Nutrient-rich substrates — aquasoils like ADA Amazonia or Tropica Aquarium Soil contain iron and other nutrients that benefit this plant from planting day.
A common dosing approach is to use a comprehensive liquid fertiliser daily or every other day, with an additional iron supplement two to three times per week. Watch your plants — if new growth is pale or pinkish rather than deep red, increase iron dosing gradually.
Trimming and Propagation
Ludwigia Super Red is straightforward to trim and propagate. The plant responds well to regular pruning, which encourages side shoots and creates a bushier appearance over time.
How to Trim
- Using sharp aquascaping scissors, cut the stem at your desired height — typically about halfway up the stem.
- The cut stump will produce one or two side shoots from the leaf nodes below the cut within one to two weeks.
- The cut top portion can be replanted directly into the substrate as a new stem.
Propagation Method
Propagation is as simple as replanting cuttings. Take tops of at least 8–10 cm in length, remove the lowest two or three pairs of leaves, and press the bare stem into the substrate. Roots will develop from the buried nodes within a week. In Singapore’s warm water, rooting is generally quick.
Over several trim-and-replant cycles, you can turn five stems into a dense bush of twenty or more. This is one of the reasons Ludwigia Super Red is so popular — a small initial purchase multiplies rapidly.
Comparison with L. repens and AR Mini
Hobbyists often ask how Ludwigia Super Red compares to other popular red plants. Here is a side-by-side comparison:
| Feature | Ludwigia Super Red | Ludwigia repens | AR Mini |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colour intensity | Deep burgundy-red | Reddish-brown to orange-red | Dark red to magenta |
| Light requirement | Moderate to high | Low to moderate | Moderate to high |
| CO2 requirement | Beneficial, not essential | Not needed | Strongly recommended |
| Growth rate | Moderate to fast | Fast | Slow |
| Maximum height | 30–40 cm | 30–50 cm | 10–20 cm |
| Difficulty | Easy to moderate | Easy | Moderate |
| Best placement | Midground to background | Midground to background | Foreground to midground |
Ludwigia repens is easier but less dramatically red. AR Mini (Alternanthera reineckii ‘Mini’) is more compact and suited to foreground placement, but it demands more in terms of light and CO2. Ludwigia Super Red occupies the sweet spot between them — deeper colour than L. repens, less demanding than AR Mini.

Placement Tips for Aquascaping
Ludwigia Super Red works best when planted in groups of five to ten stems in the midground or background. A few placement strategies that work particularly well:
- Contrast against green — place a bush of Ludwigia Super Red next to bright green plants like Rotala rotundifolia ‘Green’ or Hygrophila. The colour contrast is striking.
- Focal point positioning — use the rule of thirds. Position your red bush at one of the intersecting points of an imaginary 3×3 grid overlaid on your tank for maximum visual impact.
- Graduated height — plant shorter stems at the front of the group and taller stems at the rear for a natural, sloping look.
- Street or path accent — in an aquascape with a path or ‘street’ leading to the background, a splash of Super Red on one side draws the eye along the path.
Avoid planting Ludwigia Super Red directly in front of other red plants — too much red in one area loses the contrast effect and can look flat. Instead, separate red groups with green to let each pop visually.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Ludwigia Super Red turning green?
The most common cause is insufficient light. Under low light, the plant prioritises chlorophyll production over red pigments, resulting in greenish or brownish leaves. Increase your light intensity or duration (up to 8 hours). Also check your iron dosing — iron deficiency can contribute to poor red colouration.
Can I grow Ludwigia Super Red in a low-tech tank?
Yes. It will grow without CO2 and under moderate light. The colour may not be as intense as in a high-tech setup, but it will still display red tones, especially in the upper leaves closer to the light source. Supplement with liquid iron and root tabs for the best results in a low-tech environment.
How fast does Ludwigia Super Red grow?
Under moderate light without CO2, expect roughly 2–4 cm of growth per week. With CO2 and high light, this increases to 5–8 cm per week. In Singapore’s warm water (28–32 °C), growth rates tend toward the faster end, so plan for regular trimming every two to three weeks.
Is Ludwigia Super Red suitable for nano tanks?
It can be used in nano tanks (under 30 litres) with regular trimming, but keep in mind that it grows tall. You will need to trim it frequently to prevent it from overshadowing other plants. In very small tanks, consider AR Mini as an alternative for red colouration, as it stays compact naturally.
