Nano Aquascape Guide: Stunning Planted Tanks Under 20 Litres
Small tanks demand big creativity. This nano aquascape guide under 20 litres covers everything you need to build a striking planted setup on a compact footprint — perfect for desktops, shelving units, or that narrow ledge in your HDB flat. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, Singapore, we have spent over two decades designing nano layouts and can confirm: a 10-litre cube can hold just as much visual impact as a 200-litre showpiece when the fundamentals are right.
Why Go Nano?
Space is a genuine constraint in Singapore. A 15-litre cube measures roughly 25 × 25 × 25 cm and sits comfortably on a standard IKEA Kallax shelf. Water changes take minutes, not hours. Startup costs stay low — a quality nano kit with light, filter and tank runs SGD 80–150. And because the water volume is small, every design choice matters, which forces you to refine your eye faster than any large tank would.
Choosing the Right Tank
For nano aquascapes, rimless glass cubes between 8 and 20 litres are the standard. Popular options in local shops include the ADA Cube Garden Mini series, the ANS Opticlear 20 cm cube, and various UNS tanks. Ultra-clear (low-iron) glass makes a noticeable difference at this scale because you view the scape from close range. Avoid tall, narrow tanks — a 2:1 width-to-height ratio gives you far more planting area and better light penetration.
Lighting for Nano Tanks
LED units designed for nano setups typically draw 5–15 watts. In the 6500–7000 K colour temperature range, they support most easy plants without encouraging excessive algae. The Twinstar S-series and Chihiros C2 are popular choices locally, both priced around SGD 40–70. Mount the light 10–15 cm above the water surface and run it for seven hours daily when the tank is new, extending to eight hours once plant growth is established.
Hardscape at Miniature Scale
Proportion is the trickiest part of nano hardscaping. A single well-shaped stone or a small piece of driftwood often works better than a cluttered arrangement. Seiryu stone, dragon stone and spider wood are all available at local aquarium shops along Serangoon North or online. Cut spider wood branches with secateurs to fit your layout — there is no rule against trimming hardscape to suit the tank. Place the focal point roughly one-third from either side to follow the golden ratio, just as you would in a larger setup.
Substrate and Soil
Aquasoil remains the best substrate choice for planted nano tanks. A 3-litre bag of ADA Amazonia or Tropica Aquarium Soil covers a 20 cm cube to a depth of about 3 cm at the front and 5 cm at the back. That slope adds depth to the composition. Singapore’s PUB tap water is soft at GH 2–4, which pairs well with most aquasoils since they tend to lower pH and hardness further. Rinse your soil gently before adding it to reduce the initial ammonia spike.
Plant Selection for Under 20 Litres
Stick to species that stay compact. Foreground carpets like Micranthemum ‘Monte Carlo’, Hemianthus callitrichoides (HC Cuba), or Marsilea hirsuta work beautifully. For midground texture, Bucephalandra varieties glued to stone or wood add colour without outgrowing the tank. Background options include Rotala rotundifolia trimmed frequently, or Pogostemon helferi for a star-shaped accent. Mosses — Christmas moss, flame moss, weeping moss — are nano staples because they attach to hardscape and never overwhelm the space. In Singapore’s warm climate (28–32 °C room temperature), choose heat-tolerant species; avoid plants that demand temperatures below 24 °C.
Filtration and Water Management
Hang-on-back filters or small internal sponge filters are standard for tanks under 20 litres. Flow rate should turn over the tank volume roughly four to six times per hour — so a 12-litre tank needs a filter rated at 50–70 litres per hour. Sponge filters double as shrimp-safe intakes if you plan to keep neocaridina. Because Singapore’s tap water contains chloramine rather than free chlorine, always dose a conditioner such as Seachem Prime before water changes. Weekly 30–40% changes keep nutrient levels stable in these small volumes.
CO2: Do You Need It?
For easy plants, no. Good lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate are sufficient. If you want to carpet HC Cuba or push fast growth from Rotala, a small pressurised CO2 system with a nano diffuser will help. Budget around SGD 150–200 for a basic regulator and 1-litre cylinder. Alternatively, DIY citric acid CO2 kits cost under SGD 40 and suit nano tanks reasonably well as a starting point. Aim for a drop checker showing light green — approximately 30 ppm — during the photoperiod.
Maintenance Tips
Nano tanks are less forgiving than large ones. Evaporation in Singapore’s heat can shift parameters quickly, so top up with treated water every two to three days. Trim stem plants weekly before they shade lower growth. Remove any dying leaves immediately — decomposing matter in a small volume spikes ammonia fast. A turkey baster is the best tool for spot-cleaning detritus from tight spaces between stones. Keep a magnetic glass cleaner or a small algae scraper handy; biofilm builds up on nano glass within days.
Stocking Considerations
Resist the urge to overstock. A 10–15 litre nano aquascape supports a small shrimp colony (ten to fifteen neocaridina) or a trio of Boraras brigittae. Tanks of 15–20 litres can house a single betta, a group of six chilli rasboras, or a pair of sparkling gouramis. The golden rule: fewer fish means cleaner water and a longer-lasting scape. A nano aquascape guide under 20 litres would be incomplete without this reminder — livestock restraint is what separates thriving nano tanks from problem ones.
