Aquascaping With Floating Plants Only: Shade Garden From Above

Aquascaping With Floating Plants Only

Not every aquascape needs rooted plants, CO2 injection or expensive substrate. An aquascape floating plants only guide flips the traditional approach upside down, literally, by letting the surface do all the decorative work while the water column below stays open and uncluttered. Gensou Aquascaping in Singapore has set up floating-plant tanks for clients who want living greenery without the maintenance demands of a fully planted layout.

The Appeal of a Floating Garden

Floating plants grow faster than almost any rooted species because they access atmospheric CO2 directly and receive unfiltered light. This rapid growth means powerful nutrient export, crystal-clear water and virtually zero algae problems. From above, a mature floating garden looks like a miniature lily pond. From below, dappled light filtering through the leaves creates a natural forest-canopy effect that many fish find calming.

Best Floating Plants to Use

Salvinia minima forms dense, textured mats with tiny oval leaves and is almost impossible to kill. Limnobium laevigatum, Amazon frogbit, has larger round leaves and long trailing roots that fry use as shelter. Red root floaters (Phyllanthus fluitans) turn deep red under strong light, adding colour contrast. Pistia stratiotes, water lettuce, grows impressively large but needs more space. Mixing two or three species creates visual variety and different root lengths.

Tank Setup Without Substrate

A bare-bottom tank is the simplest approach and makes cleaning effortless. If you prefer aesthetics, a thin layer of sand or fine gravel gives a natural look without the cost of aquasoil. Hardscape is optional. A few pieces of driftwood or smooth river stones on the bottom provide shelter for fish and visual anchoring. The focus remains overhead, so keep the bottom minimal.

Lighting Considerations

Floating plants need direct, strong light at the surface. However, because they shade everything below, substrate-level PAR drops dramatically. This is actually an advantage, as low light below the floaters means algae cannot establish on glass or hardscape. Use a standard LED fixture rated for your tank length and let the plants regulate how much light penetrates. In Singapore’s climate, avoid placing tanks near windows, as direct sun can overheat a small volume quickly.

Surface Flow Management

Strong surface agitation pushes floating plants to one side, creating bare patches and uneven coverage. Reduce filter output flow or angle the return nozzle downward. A floating ring made from airline tubing keeps plants in a designated zone if you want open areas for feeding. Balance is key: you need enough surface movement for gas exchange but not so much that plants cluster against one wall.

Fish That Thrive Under Floating Cover

Bettas adore floating plants. The dangling roots provide resting spots near the surface, and the shade reduces stress. Gouramis, particularly Trichopsis pumila and Trichogaster lalius, build bubble nests among the roots. Hatchetfish feel secure under dense cover and are less likely to jump. Bottom dwellers like kuhli loaches and corydoras benefit from the subdued lighting. Essentially, any species that prefers dim, calm conditions will thrive in this setup.

Maintenance: Easier Than You Think

Scoop out excess plants weekly to prevent complete surface coverage, which blocks gas exchange and can suffocate fish. A small kitchen strainer works perfectly for harvesting. Floating plants absorb nitrates voraciously, so water changes can often be stretched to fortnightly in lightly stocked tanks, though weekly remains ideal. Dose a liquid fertiliser with iron and potassium occasionally, since floating plants deplete these quickly. Surplus plants sell well on Carousell at $2-3 per bag, turning your low-maintenance tank into a small side earner.
