Red Devil Crab Geosesarma Care Guide: Paludarium Crabs
Paludariums have surged in popularity among Singapore hobbyists, and few inhabitants suit them better than the red devil crab. This red devil crab geosesarma care guide from Gensou Aquascaping Singapore, shaped by over 20 years of hands-on experience at 5 Everton Park, explains how to create the ideal semi-terrestrial habitat for Geosesarma hagen. Vibrant crimson claws and a compact 2–3 cm carapace make the red devil crab a showstopper in any paludarium.
Species Overview
Geosesarma hagen hails from the forested highlands of Java, Indonesia. Unlike fully aquatic crabs, red devils are semi-terrestrial — they need both land and water areas to thrive. Their bright red-orange chelipeds contrast with a dark purple-brown carapace, producing a look that justifies the dramatic common name.
Several Geosesarma species circulate in the hobby under similar names. True red devils (G. hagen) have distinctly crimson claws and a compact, rounded body. If the claws look more yellow or brown, you likely have a different species.
Paludarium Setup
A 30-litre paludarium with a 60/40 land-to-water ratio is the minimum for a group of four to six crabs. Build the land area from expanded clay balls (LECA) covered with sphagnum moss and leaf litter. Cork bark and driftwood provide climbing surfaces and hiding spots.
The water section needs only 5–8 cm depth — enough for the crabs to submerge and moisten their gills. A small internal filter or air-driven sponge filter keeps the water clean. Use a tight-fitting lid with ventilation holes — these crabs are persistent climbers and will escape through any gap.
Temperature and Humidity
Singapore’s warm, humid climate is genuinely advantageous for Geosesarma keeping. Ambient temperatures of 24–28 °C and humidity above 75 % match their requirements perfectly. In air-conditioned rooms, mist the enclosure once daily or install a small ultrasonic fogger to maintain humidity levels.
Avoid temperatures above 30 °C for prolonged periods. Placing the paludarium away from windows receiving direct afternoon sun prevents dangerous overheating.
Water Parameters
Keep water conditions stable: pH 7.0–8.0, GH 4–10 dGH, temperature matching the land area. PUB tap water, treated for chloramine, works well. Change the water section completely every week — its small volume means waste accumulates quickly.
Add crushed coral or cuttlebone fragments to both land and water areas. Calcium is essential for healthy moulting, and deficiencies lead to incomplete sheds and eventual death.
Diet
Red devil crabs are opportunistic omnivores. Offer a varied rotation: small sinking pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, blanched vegetables (carrot, courgette, spinach), and occasional fruit pieces like banana or mango. Protein should feature two to three times weekly — they readily accept crushed snails and insect-based fish food.
Scatter food across the land area near hiding spots. These crabs prefer eating on land rather than underwater. Remove uneaten food within 12 hours to prevent mould and fruit fly infestations.
Behaviour and Social Dynamics
Red devils are primarily nocturnal. During the day they tuck into leaf litter and under bark. After dark, they emerge to patrol their territory, forage, and interact. Males are slightly larger with proportionally bigger claws and may spar over favoured hiding spots.
Aggression is manageable in a well-furnished paludarium with ample cover. One male per two to three females works best. Avoid housing with fish — the shallow water section limits options, and most fish will stress or be caught by the crabs.
Breeding
Unlike many crab species, Geosesarma breeds entirely in freshwater without a marine larval stage. Females carry 20–50 eggs under their abdominal flap for four to six weeks. Fully formed miniature crabs — roughly 3 mm across — emerge directly and immediately begin exploring the land area.
Juveniles are vulnerable to predation by adults. Dense leaf litter and moss provide critical hiding spots. In a well-planted paludarium with low population density, some juveniles survive without separation. Dedicated breeders move berried females to a smaller enclosure for better fry survival rates.
Sourcing and Pricing
Red devil crabs are available through specialist invertebrate sellers and hobbyist groups on Carousell and Shopee. Prices range from $8–$15 per crab. Buy groups of at least four to observe natural social behaviour.
This red devil crab geosesarma care guide provides the foundation for a captivating paludarium project. Gensou Aquascaping Singapore recommends these crabs as an excellent entry point into semi-terrestrial setups — our tropical climate does half the work for you.
