How to Score Higher in Aquascaping Competitions: Judges Reveal What Wins
Breaking into the top rankings of any aquascaping competition requires more than a beautiful tank; it demands a strategic understanding of what judges actually reward. Learning how to score higher aquascaping competition entries is the goal of this guide from Gensou Aquascaping at 5 Everton Park, Singapore. Over more than 20 years in the hobby, we have studied hundreds of winning entries and spoken with judges across multiple contests to distil the factors that separate the top 100 from the rest of the field.
Composition Is King
Every judge we have spoken to places composition at the top of their scoring criteria. A layout with a clear focal point, balanced proportions and a convincing sense of depth outscores a technically perfect but visually flat arrangement. The golden ratio, placing your main hardscape element one-third from the edge, remains a reliable starting framework. From there, use diminishing scale, smaller rocks and finer-textured plants toward the rear, to create the illusion that the viewer is looking into a vast landscape rather than a glass box.
Depth and Perspective Tricks
Top competitors build substrate slopes that rise steeply toward the back, sometimes exceeding 15 cm in height, and use fine-grained cosmetic sand in the foreground to draw the eye inward. Pathways that narrow toward a vanishing point at the rear are a classic depth cue. Planting progressively smaller-leaved species from front to back reinforces the perspective. Glossostigma elatinoides or Eleocharis parvula in the foreground gives way to Rotala species and then Hemianthus micranthemoides at the back, mimicking how plants appear smaller at distance in the natural world.
Plant Health and Condition
No amount of compositional skill compensates for unhealthy plants. Judges look for vibrant colour, compact growth, absence of algae and complete coverage with no bare substrate patches. Achieve this by stabilising your tank chemistry at least two months before the photo shoot. Consistent CO2 injection at 30 ppm during the light period, a reliable fertilisation routine and stable lighting of eight hours per day create the conditions for peak plant health.
In Singapore’s warm water, some demanding species like Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’ struggle above 29 degrees Celsius. Use a fan or chiller to hold temperature at 25-27 degrees for the final growing phase.
Fish Selection and Behaviour
Fish add life and scale to a layout, but the wrong choice can undermine an otherwise strong entry. Schooling species that move in tight formation, such as Paracheirodon simulans (green neon tetra) and Trigonostigma heteromorpha (harlequin rasbora), photograph well and convey a sense of natural habitat. Avoid large, bold fish that dominate the frame. The fish should complement the scape, not compete with it for attention.
Capture the school in a cohesive group during photography. Gently directing water flow toward one end of the tank just before shooting encourages fish to school tightly in the opposite direction.
Photography Excellence
Your photograph is the only thing judges see. Invest in proper equipment: a camera with manual exposure control, a 50-85 mm lens, a sturdy tripod and a remote shutter release. Shoot in RAW format for maximum editing latitude. Set white balance manually using a grey card held against the front glass. Remove every piece of visible equipment, including thermometers, heaters and CO2 diffusers, before shooting. Even a tiny suction cup left on the glass can cost you ranks.
Storytelling and Emotional Impact
The highest-scoring entries tell a visual story. Whether it is a misty mountain ridge, a sun-dappled forest floor or a riverbank at dawn, the layout evokes a specific place or mood. Judges frequently describe winning entries as transporting them somewhere. Think about the narrative your layout communicates and ensure every element, hardscape, plants, lighting colour temperature, fish behaviour, supports that story.
Learning from Past Winners
Study the IAPLC, AGA and other contest galleries exhaustively. Note recurring patterns: the ratio of hardscape to open space, preferred plant palettes, lighting angles. Identify what each top-ranked layout does differently from entries ranked just below it. Singapore hobbyists can visit local aquascaping meetups and the annual Aquarama trade show for live discussions with experienced competitors.
Incremental Improvement
Treat each competition cycle as a learning opportunity rather than a pass-fail test. Submit your best work, read judge feedback, refine your technique and enter again the following year. The aquascapers who consistently rank among the top 50 globally did not arrive there in a single attempt. Persistence, combined with honest self-critique, is the true path to competitive success.
