45 Gallon Fish Tank Setup Guide: Tall Format Realities
This 45 gallon fish tank setup guide focuses on the tall 45 format (91 x 30 x 64 cm, ~170 L) that Singapore LFS and furniture stores push as a showpiece cabinet tank. At Gensou Aquascaping, 5 Everton Park, we set up a handful of these each quarter, and the truth is: a 45 tall is a demanding shape. You get height you cannot fill, narrow depth for aquascaping, and a smaller footprint than a 55 gallon for the same water volume.
The Real Dimensions
Standard 45 tall: 36 x 12 x 25 in (91 x 30 x 64 cm), ~170 L. That 30 cm front-to-back depth is your biggest constraint — it kills foreground-midground-background layering that defines Nature Aquarium style scapes.
Tank, Stand and Floor Load
Filled weight is roughly 200 kg with substrate and rockwork. HDB living rooms handle this fine against a load-bearing wall. Avoid placing it in the middle of a span or near a balcony edge. A steel-frame stand at 65-70 cm puts the waterline around eye level when seated.
Filtration Sizing
Target 4-6x turnover. A canister rated 800-1000 L/h (Eheim Classic 350, Oase BioMaster 350 or the budget Sunsun HW-703B) is the sweet spot. Internal filters waste too much of the tight depth; avoid them on this format.
Lighting the Height
64 cm water column swallows light. A single entry-level LED will grow anubias and java fern only. For carpet plants you need a Chihiros WRGB II 60 or Week Aqua P600 running 80-100% intensity. CO2 injection becomes non-negotiable if you want demanding stems.
Heating and Temperature
Singapore ambient holds 28-30°C, so heaters sit idle unless you run aircon through the living room overnight. Two clip fans are more useful than a heater — they cool evaporatively by 1-2°C during the worst afternoon heat. See our aquarium cooling guide.
Substrate and Hardscape
ADA Amazonia Version 2 (9 L bag) is enough for a 4-5 cm bed. With only 30 cm depth you want tall, narrow hardscape — Seiryu columns or dragon stone towers that use the height. Spider wood pieces set vertically also work. More in our vertical hardscape scapes.
Aquascape Style Matches
A 45 tall suits Iwagumi-vertical or jungle scapes over Dutch or Iwagumi-horizontal. Honestly, a 45 long at 48 x 12 x 19 in is the better choice for most hobbyists — see our 45 gallon tall vs long comparison before buying.
Cycling Timeline
Silent cycle with heavily planted dry start (3 weeks) or traditional ammonia cycle (4-6 weeks). PUB tap water comes in at pH 7.2-7.6 with low GH, so once cycled you have a broad species window.
Stocking Suggestions
Vertically oriented species earn their keep: angelfish pair, pearl gouramis, discus (if you maintain daily water changes), or a rummynose school that will use the full height during feeding. Bottom species feel wasted here because the footprint stays small — if corydoras appeal, pick a 45 long or 55 gallon instead. Our vertical swimmers list covers full options.
Maintenance Routine
Weekly 30-40% water changes with an aged siphon bucket. Glass cleaning is awkward at 64 cm — a magnetic scraper with a long handle saves your wrist. Filter media rinse monthly in tank water only.
Singapore Sourcing Summary

Y618 Serangoon North carries cabinet-stand bundles around SGD $550. Green Chapter Jurong West has second-hand 45 talls on consignment for SGD $200-$320. Iwarna Aquafarm stocks premium equipment and livestock. Nature Aquarium Gallery on Thomson Road does full bespoke 45 tall builds from SGD $1800. Polyart sells ADA soil bags and accessories. Carousell is your best bet for used tanks at SGD $180-$280 including stand. Shopee covers Chihiros lights (SGD $210 for WRGB II 60), Sunsun canisters (SGD $110) and CO2 regulators (SGD $90). Budget SGD $900-$1400 end-to-end.
