Hints
Crinkled, Narrow-Leaved Onion Plant
Crinums are members of the narcissus family and have a bulb that they can use to store nutrients. The deeply crinkled leaves of the Crinum calamistratum can grow up to 80 – 100 cm in length! Depending on the size of your aquarium, the upper leaf blades may produce flower stalks. They do not require particularly strong lighting, but gentle water flow, such as near to an outflow, promotes growth. Crinum calamistratum is best used on its own. This gives the most attractive results.
Crinum calamistratum, the crinkled onion plant
Crinum calamistratum is a bulb plant from Cameroon with extraordinary deeply crinkled, narrow leaves that can stretch up to 80-100cm long. Those long, twisting blades make a dramatic statement, so we always advise planting it on its own as a specimen rather than crowding it; given space, a single bulb becomes a striking centrepiece. It naturally suits taller tanks where the leaves have room to rise and sway.
It is hardy and undemanding once established, storing nutrients in its bulb and not needing especially strong light. A gentle current, such as near a filter outflow, encourages healthy growth. One quirk worth knowing: Crinum dislike being uprooted and can sulk for weeks if moved, so choose its position carefully at planting and leave it be. It settles well in our warm 27-29C SG tanks without any special cooling.
