Description

Anubias barteri is a very variable species in tropical West Africa. In the meantime however, there are also numerous mutations from production nurseries. A particularly compact cultivated form is the small-growing ‘Coin Leaf’. Its name refers to the almost roundish shape of the leaves. This plant is best maintained in smaller aquariums, due to its smaller size. Especially for cichlid lovers an attractive enrichment for the planting of the cichlid worlds in the living space.

Anubias barteri ‘Coin Leaf’ for compact SG tanks

The almost circular leaves give this cultivar its name, and its small, compact habit makes it one of the easier Anubias to work into a tighter layout. We recommend it for the smaller tanks that fit flat life in Singapore, where a full-size barteri would quickly outgrow the scape. Tied low onto driftwood or wedged into a rock crevice, those coin-shaped leaves add a distinctive texture among finer-leaved plants.

Like every Anubias, the trick is never to bury the rhizome in substrate, or it will rot. Glue or tie it to hardscape and let the roots find their own grip. It is genuinely undemanding, thriving in modest light across our typical soft, slightly acidic tap water, and it tolerates our warm 27-29C tanks without a chiller. Keep light moderate to limit algae settling on the slow-growing leaves.
