Keeping Japan Mini Marimo in Singapore Tanks

These dense little moss balls are one of the easiest greens we stock for hobbyists who want something living without committing to a full planted setup. Mini Marimo are slow-growing algal balls that simply rest on the substrate or nestle into hardscape crevices, so there is no planting, no root tabs and no CO2 fuss. They suit busy HDB and condo keepers who want a low-maintenance accent that shrimp and small fish love grazing across.

The main thing to watch in our climate is heat. Marimo are naturally cool-water balls, and sustained tank temperatures at the upper end of Singapore’s ambient 27-29C can leave them looking soft or browning over time. We suggest a shaded position away from the brightest light, gentle flow so they stay rounded, and an occasional roll by hand to keep their shape even. A monthly squeeze in old tank water during your water change rinses out trapped debris.

Browse more low-light greenery in our epiphytes range, and if you are deciding between mossy textures our moss types compared guide helps. New arrivals settle best with a gentle soak first, as covered in our plant acclimation guide.
