Christmas Moss (Vesicularia dubyana) in Tissue Culture
Christmas moss earns its name from the triangular, fern-like fronds that branch out like tiny pine boughs, giving aquascapes a lush, layered texture. Supplied as a tissue-culture cup, it starts life clean and free of snails and nuisance algae, which saves a lot of grief in a carefully planned tank. Spread thin layers over driftwood, stone or mesh and tie or glue it in place; thin coverage grows in denser and avoids the dead, browned core that thick clumps develop.
It is a forgiving epiphyte that suits Singapore tanks well. Soft slightly acidic tap water is fine once dechlorinated, ambient 27-29C is acceptable, and it grows under moderate light. Cooler, well-lit tanks with a little CO2 produce the tightest, most pronounced Christmas-tree branching. Gentle flow keeps detritus from settling into the fronds and helps it stay clean and green.
