What happens if I don’t replace JBL ClearMec after 3 months as indicated ?
> After the expiry date, JBL ClearMec is no longer able to bind nitrates and phosphates. Besides this, the surface of the material shrinks so that the material is no longer able to act as a filter.
JBL Clearmec Plus for Nitrate and Phosphate Control
Clearmec Plus is a chemical filter media that pulls nitrite, nitrate and phosphate out of the water column, sitting inside your filter to strip the nutrients that feed algae. It arrives pre-packed in mesh bags ready to drop straight into a canister or filter chamber, with the litre size geared toward larger freshwater tanks. For keepers whose nitrates creep up between water changes, it is a useful supporting tool rather than a replacement for maintenance.
In Singapore’s warm tanks, biological processes run fast and nutrients can accumulate quickly, especially in well-stocked or heavily fed community setups. We treat media like this as a helping hand alongside the basics: sensible feeding, planted growth where possible, and consistent water changes. Slot the bags into the flow path of your filter so water passes through them, and remember the media is a finite resource that exhausts over time and needs replacing.
