Description
Taxiphyllum ‘Spiky’
‘Spiky’ is Asiatic and grows 2-10 cm tall. Best described as Christmas moss’ big brother, it is bigger and forms many deep green, branched shoots.
Spiky moss does best on vertical surfaces where the branched shoots will show.
A beautiful carpeting effect is possible if you plant small tufts into the bottom substrate with a small interspace.
It grows fast and thrives at a very low light intensity.

Tropica Taxiphyllum ‘Spiky’ Moss in SG Aquascapes
Taxiphyllum ‘Spiky’ is the bigger, bolder cousin of Christmas moss, forming deep green branched shoots that look their best cascading down vertical surfaces. We like it for moss walls, driftwood faces and the shaded backs of hardscape, where its layered fronds add real texture and depth. It is undemanding and thrives even at low light, suiting the many low-tech tanks in Singapore homes.
Attach a thin layer to mesh or wood and let it knit in rather than packing it thick, which can rot underneath in our warm water. It grows steadily at ambient 27-29C, though good flow and regular trims keep the shoots tidy and free of trapped debris. Patience early on rewards you with a dense, sculptural mat over a few weeks, and once established it needs only the occasional trim to hold its shape.
