JUN Plant Gravel (S) as an inert base in Singapore tanks

Unlike active aquasoils, this fine natural gravel is inert, meaning it will not alter your water chemistry. That makes it a sensible pick for keepers who want stable parameters, for goldfish and medaka setups, or for low-tech tanks where you would rather not deal with a soil’s ammonia leaching and finite lifespan. The rounded 5mm grains plant easily and won’t shred delicate roots, and because it doesn’t break down you can rinse and reuse it across rescapes for years.

Since the gravel adds no nutrients, root-feeding plants like swords and crypts will want root tabs tucked into the bed to stay lush. We always tell customers to wash it hard under running tap water first; the natural collection carries fine dust that clouds a fresh fill. The S grain holds well in Singapore’s typical 60cm tanks without compacting, and pairs nicely with low-light plants in a fuss-free, no-CO2 arrangement.
